Kindergarten Readiness

As the summer approaches many parents & children are thinking ahead to the upcoming school year. The question that I often hear from parents in regards to entering kindergarten is, “Is my child ready?”.

It has been my experience, that children who have attended a high quality childcare or preschool program are most often ready for kindergarten by the time they are four or five years of age. Many of the skills that are required of the children for kindergarten are taught in preschool. Preschools often focus on academics along with social skills that children need to have when starting kindergarten.

Preschool can lead to a positive experience entering kindergarten, however isn’t always necessary. Many stay at home parents (SAHP) work with their children on the skills that are needed as well. Including, engaging their children in social situations where their children learn how to get along with peers & adults.

Parents make the decision as to how they want their children to be taught & in what environment they believe is best for their child. Some parents choose to place their children in a structured program outside of the home, and some parents choose to teach their children themselves. Parents know their children best.
However, all parents of children about to enter into kindergarten must ask themselves if their children are ready for this new & challenging experience.

It is important too, that the school that your child will be attending is the right fit for your child & your family. Check out the school’s test scores, call & find out if you can meet with the principal & tour the facility.

This is the start to an exciting new experience for both you & your child. Be informed & stay in touch with the school. When parents feel good and excited about things, their children pick up on that, & will be excited too. For more information on kindergarten readiness check out the following sites:
