Natural Remedies for Children
Thumbing through the May issue of Parents magazine I stumbled upon the article, Natural Remedies for Children. Knowing that there will come a time when one of these remedies can be put to the test in our house, I ripped the article out for future use.
Well that time is upon us! Our entire family has caught a bug and we are doing all that we can to help it pass quickly. When my children come down with a cold/virus I do not hesitate to call our pediatrician; That is what they are there for. Since my children do not have fevers, only congestion & a soar throat we were told to wait it out (unless fever or other symptoms arise).
Sometimes the only way to relieve certain symptoms when children aren’t feeling well is to give them medication; However, when possible you can use natural remedies to try & give comfort (always check with your doctor or pediatrician first)
According to the article in the May issue of Parents magazine here are just a few natural remedies safe for children:
- Honey & lemon juice for a soar throat:
mix together a tablespoon of each, microwave for 20 seconds until warm (not hot),& have your child swallow a mixture at a time (CAUTION: honey is not for children under 1 year of age)
Chamomile tea for colic
Baking soda for bug bites:
mix a teaspoon of baking soda with just enough water to make a thick paste, smear it on the bites, & let dry (eases the itch)
- Stick of gum for indigestion (in children 4 years and older):
when your child complains of a full stomach after a big meal have them chew on a stick of gum — the extra saliva produced will neutralize the problematic excess stomach acid
- Bubble wand for anxiety:
breathing slowly will help your child relax when they are felling stressed - encourage them to blow long slow streams of bubbles
