Our Children & Our Environment

It is not news to hear that children mimic the actions of the adults around them; However, as parents of young children we sometimes need to be reminded of this.
With code orange & code red days, the price of gas increasing, the affects of global warming, droughts … now is the time to teach our young children how to take care of our planet.
As a family, we try to do our part in taking care of environment by:
- recycling every week
- not wasting water
- purchasing a hybrid vehicle
Although, I must admit - we could be doing a lot more than what we are currently doing & my husband has gotten the ball rolling!
Thomas’ office is just over 2 miles from our house, so he made the decision to stop driving his car to work and bike those 2 miles. This is something that has gotten our almost 3 yr old & almost 2 yr old very excited! Every morning they talk about daddy riding his bike to the office & how much they want a bike of their own now.
Many young children do not yet have the understanding of why biking is better than driving an automobile — however they will see it done & if it looks fun, they will want to be a part of it. The same thing goes for recycling products in your home. Children learn from the examples that are set.
My children can mimic my actions when it comes to placing recyclables aside & trying to limit what we actually throw into the trash; turing water faucets off while brushing teeth or bathing, and also by planting trees & vegetable gardens & talking about organic items when we are at the grocery store.
As children grow and are able to understand what it means to be responsible for the planet on which we live - they will be able to take on more of the responsibility themselves & know why it is important. Our children are the future of this planet - lets show them that we care & teach them how to take care of our home.
